Toto Wolff clarifies Wikipedia remark over Max Verstappens new F1 record, admits it was not th
Max Verstappen has continued to dominate Formula 1 this season. The Dutch driver broke the record for the most wins in F1 history at the Italian GP with a tenth consecutive victory. However, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff had called this feat irrelevant. Now, Wolff has defended his remark after facing backlash from fans.
The Austrian billionaire admitted that it was not the smartest move to call F1 records just something for Wikipedia. The 51-year-old had even claimed that records such as that of Max Verstappen were not read by anyone on the aforementioned platform. However, Wolff stated that this was just his mindset. He told NU.nl, “It may not have been the most intelligent thing to say, but that’s really my mindset.”
Meanwhile, Verstappen had already mentioned that he was not affected by Wolff’s remark. Rather, the two-time world champion took a dig at his rival for continuing to talk about his achievements. The Mercedes team boss mentioned that he did respect Red Bull’s recent success in the sport. Wolff said, “Nevertheless, you have to respect Red Bull’s achievements. The best driver in the best car becomes the champion.”
Toto Wolff’s Mercedes is still far behind Max Verstappen and Red Bull
Mercedes dominated Formula 1 for several years since the start of the Turbo Hybrid era in 2014. The Silver Arrows won an unprecedented eight consecutive world titles. With Lewis Hamilton bagging six of his seven championships. However, Verstappen and Red Bull rose up to be the force that put an end to the domination by the German team.
Max Verstappen has won two back-to-back world titles with a third one seeming inevitable. On the other hand, Wolff’s squad has fallen behind Red Bull and Ferrari this season. Although, the Brackley-based team has been trying to bring major upgrades over the course of this season. As the Silver Arrows try to get back to the front of the grid.

— Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team (@MercedesAMGF1) September 13, 2023Mercedes would be looking to get the most out of its car for the Singapore GP this weekend. Max Verstappen is expected to be the favorite for the street race as the Dutch driver tries to continue his record-breaking streak. However, it remains to be seen if Toto Wolff’s squad can deliver a shock result and perhaps topple the Red Bull driver from the top step of the podium.
