Homes evacuated as crews battle wildfire in North Carolina
HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Officials say a wildfire on Sheepback Mountain in North Carolina has impacted approximately 200 acres.
The fire is currently contained to wooded areas, according to fire crews, and it's currently at 30% containment. Officials with Haywood County Emergency Services say anticipated afternoon rain on Tuesday could help increase containment.
There have been no reported injuries or property damage.
"Crews are working around the clock to contain this fire and we are grateful for the large outpouring of support from WNC community members who reside both inside and outside of Haywood County," officials said.
Evacuation notices were issued Monday afternoon for certain structures. According to Haywood County Emergency Management Services, 17 homes on the mountain were included in this order.
Haywood County spokesperson Allison Richmond said the fire is believed to have started as a small outdoor fire that grew out of control.
In addition to the dozen crews battling flames from the ground, Richmond said they are also getting air support via water drops from airplanes and helicopters.
